Multi-Language Solution

IIS’s Multi-Language Solution Encompassing 40 Languages Will Change the Internet Society

1. Issues in the Age of Informational Grand Voyages

Vast amount of information transmitted and received in internet is “ocean”; individual and corporate users are “voyagers” traveling in this ocean; today, the voyagers in Japan deem it critical to search the information they need easily and precisely, grasp them efficiently, and take advantage of them for their intellectual needs and value creation. Also, the information disseminated in a rapid pace in internet globally every day is vast in volume and in multiple languages;

in order to satisfy the intellectual needs of users from a global viewpoint, what is critically needed is development of execution infrastructure for information collection, search and analysis applications capable of mass processing at high speed. At the same time, as the new trend in internet Web 2.0 becomes popular today, it is needed to make newly created business models to adapt to multi-lingual web services, and we at IIS Inc. firmly believe that multi-lingual is the base infrastructure of this internet era. Truly global enterprise is the one who can conduct business using multiple languages in real time.

2. How IIS Sees the World Today

With wide availability of high-speed internet connection, Japan’s access to intellectual information has vastly improved, and as a result, information collection ability of individuals, corporations and government organizations have dramatically improved, with disseminated information also greatly increasing in volume. However, while amount of information has dramatically increased, information search is dominated by Google, Yahoo and MSN, and information analysis is controlled by IBM.

There is a real concern that those infrastructure technologies might become “black box” for us, so it has become increasing important for Japan to have our own information collection, search and analyse infrastructure technologies as they will lead to next-generation service business in the era of the new trend in internet, Web 2.0.

In this international environment, we at IIS believe that it is imperative to offer multi-lingual web services which set free “language barriers” that poses obstacles in creating various business opportunities, by carefully selecting and translating ever exploding internet information in multiple languages around the world. Information senders are capable of multiple languages, while information receivers are also capable of multiple languages; we believe such mutual bidirectionality is the cornerstone of the world without any digital divide.

3. Information Economy and Society when “Language Barrier Free” is Realized

Because corporations, individuals, government organizations, universities and various research organizations can extract necessary information in home language from ever-proliferating internet multi-lingual information at wide variety, it enables Web 2.0 and next-generation service business to create new information and advanced business models, and as a result, contributes to growth of Japan’s macro economy.

By promotion of use of multi-lingual information by individuals, corporations, various associations and public organizations, “accumulation of information” is accelerated. It gives positive effect to existing product sales and service providing business models such as internet shops, mobile communication, media, advertisement, distribution and so on, and also it leads to creation of new innovations. As a result of such intellectual domino effect, it will lead to improvement in productivity and high-value-add businesses.

As explained in Japan Database Association’s English report, information in various databases in Japan has been hardly exported so far due to high translation and other costs, while import of overseas information is overwhelming, thus creating great disparity. However, thanks to new multi-lingual web services, such disparity is reversed and Japan’s various information will start to be exported to overseas; it will help resolve misunderstanding and lack of understanding at national level, and at the same time contribute to investor relations and customer satisfaction of private corporations.

4. IIS’s Resources

Established 28 years ago, IIS is one of very few multi-lingual (40 languages) translation company, with many customers and affiliated translators at home and abroad, with a significant market share.

Since our early days, we had a clear vision in popularization and expansion of internet. So, we invested in our own servers, construction of internal local area network, and production of multi-lingual homepage. We have submitted four business model patent applications in Japan, and three in the US and one in Europe; we have obtained two patents in Japan and another two in the US as of October 2007. We expect to obtain more patents in Japan which is going through patent examination process, as well as in the US and Europe. Even though we have not built prototype system yet for this business model patent, it would not be difficult, because various commercial search engines and databases are much more widely available today compared to when we submitted the application in 2001 in Japan, US and Europe. We believe this patent will create new business models in conjunction with the new trend in internet Web 2.0 and next-generation multi-lingual web services.

We at IIS strive to accumulate technical words in various fields which we encounter every day in translation business in a database; we have collected approximately four million words in 22 industrial categories in a glossary. Especially, “General Purpose Technical Lexicon” is a shareware glossary containing 3,700 thousand words in 150 industrial fields.

We have vast amount of materials for multi-lingual sentence database, and we strive to make them digitally available.
